What is the Media & Public Affairs Academy?
The Media and Public Affairs Academy seeks to build a community of self-directed learners. Our mission is to help students think more deeply about the world around them and the way in which the media shapes and influences our society. By examining history, politics, literature, media, and the arts, students will gain a broad-based knowledge of how these ideas intersect with one another. The emphasis will be on creation, connection, reflection, and curiosity.
Students in the Academy complete a series of core and elective courses which emphasize research and collaboration. Value is placed on both individual and collaborative efforts as students are exposed to the rigors and challenges of a diverse, interdependent world. Coursework will allow students to identify, cultivate, and assert their leadership qualities. As a culminating senior year experience, a student will reach across disciplines and cultures to deepen his/her understanding of a contemporary issue and create a multimedia project that raises awareness of a problem in the community, hemisphere, or world.
The Academy is a unique opportunity for students to explore interests and careers before they go to college or enter the workforce. Each student enrolled in the Academy will work closely with a Department Advisor to develop and pursue his/her individual interests. Some fields that might be of interest to students enrolled in this Academy include (but are not limited to) the following:
So what do we mean by media exactly? Malcolm X once said, “The media’s the most powerful entity on earth.” In many ways, he was right. From television, film, and radio to the internet, media is everywhere: It entertains us as well as influences our ideas and perceptions of others and the world around us. Whether you’re looking to get involved in the technical, creative, production, or administrative side of media, there are dozens of different interests and roles you can explore in this Academy.
