National English Honor Society
A chapter of the National English Honor Society (NEHS) has been established, for the first time, at Islip High School. Like membership in most other honor societies, the English Honor Society acknowledges students’ outstanding academic achievement. However, forming an NEHS chapter at Islip does more than just reward students for their excellent scholarship. This chapter will also connect our school with a national network of English teachers and students who share a special interest in literature and writing, involve students and teachers in academically and culturally enriching experiences, and provide seniors with opportunities to win scholarships. Forty-five students were welcomed into the Society this year at an Induction Ceremony in April. Each student shared a special “verse” with the audience, which consisted of family, friends, and various members of our Islip community, including Susan Schnebel, Superintendent; Ellen Semel, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction; Michael Mosca, Principal at IHS; Curtis Juengerkes, Assistant Principal at IHS; Lisa Ward, Assistant Principal at IHS; and Barbara Wagner, ELA Coordinator and NEHS Chapter Advisor.
